A patch that works with light, not chemistry

X39 is a sealed phototherapy patch worn on the skin for twelve hours at a time. Nothing crosses into your body. It reflects particular wavelengths of light back into the skin, and what the manufacturer measures is a rise in GHK-Cu — a copper peptide the body produces less of with age.

What it actually is

X39 is a small white disc with a translucent adhesive rim. Inside is a sealed lattice of amino acids and sugars. It is not a drug, a cream, a supplement or a transdermal delivery system — nothing in the patch is absorbed, and nothing is meant to be.

Body heat activates the lattice, which reflects a narrow band of visible and infrared light back into the skin. LifeWave calls this phototherapy; the broader term is photobiomodulation. There is no battery, no LED and no electronics.

The mechanism LifeWave proposes is that this reflected light raises levels of GHK-Cu, a copper tripeptide first isolated from human plasma by Dr Loren Pickart in 1973. GHK is present at roughly 200 ng/mL in a twenty-year-old and around 80 ng/mL by sixty — a decline of about 60%. GHK-Cu itself has a substantial independent literature on tissue remodelling and collagen.

What is specific to this patch — whether wearing it raises that peptide enough to matter — rests on a smaller body of work, described below with its sample sizes intact.

Mechanism

How it is meant to work

This is the sequence LifeWave describes in its patents and papers. It is a proposed mechanism, and the sequence is presented here as the company presents it.

  1. Body heat activates the lattice

    Skin radiates infrared continuously. That warmth is the only energy source the patch uses — there is nothing to charge and nothing to switch on.

  2. Light is reflected back into the skin

    The lattice returns specific visible and near-infrared wavelengths. This is the phototherapy step, and it is passive: the patch emits nothing of its own.

  3. GHK-Cu levels are reported to rise

    In LifeWave-linked studies, GHK rose within 24 hours and GHK-Cu by day 7. GHK-Cu is the copper peptide associated with tissue repair, and the one that declines with age.

  4. You judge it over weeks, not days

    Wear it twelve hours on, twelve off, rotate placement and stay hydrated. Sleep is usually the first thing people notice. Give it two to four weeks — and if nothing changes, that is a real answer too.

What people track

What wearers tend to watch for

These are the measures used in the published studies and the ones patients most often report to us. They are not promises, and individual experience varies considerably.

Sleep quality

The measure that moved earliest in the 50-person trial, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Usually the first thing wearers notice, if anything moves at all.

Short-term memory

Assessed with the WAIS-III memory subtest in the same trial. It was the strongest single result in that study.

Recovery and stamina

The reason athletic patients ask about it — GHK-Cu has a long literature in tissue repair. Worth being straight with you: no published trial has tested X39 against athletic recovery. LifeWave’s strength study was run on its wider patch technology and never mentions X39, so we do not count it here.

Nothing entering the body

Non-transdermal by design. For patients cautious about supplements or interactions, this is often the deciding factor.

The evidence, with its limits

What has actually been published

Every study below was conducted by the same research group and is funded by or linked to LifeWave. That does not make the findings wrong, but it is the first thing an honest reading has to say, and it is why the sample size and design sit in front of each result rather than in a footnote.

n=50 · double-blind RCT

Phototherapy-induced metabolism change

Randomised, double-blind, controlled; mean age 63; patch worn 8–12 hours daily for seven days. Reported improvement in short-term memory (p<0.001), sleep quality within 24 hours (p<0.04), and increases in eight amino acids. Vitality reached p<0.03 at day 2 but only p<0.08 by day 7 — the authors themselves call that near-significant, and it is often quoted without that qualification. Published in the International Journal of Research Studies in Medical and Health Sciences, 2021.

GHK-Cu production levels

A separate randomised double-blind trial, ages 40–80, measuring one thing: GHK-Cu concentration in blood. Significant increase in the active group between day 2 and day 7 (p<0.035 concentration, p<0.03 total). It reports no sleep, memory or vitality outcome — those come from the trial above, and the two are frequently conflated. Internal Medicine Research – Open Journal, 2021.

Metabolic and physiological changes

Fifteen volunteers aged 40–65, no control group, measured at baseline, day 2 and day 7 using amino acid panels, salivary cortisol and DHEAS, blood pressure, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the WAIS-III memory subtest. This is the study the later randomised work was built on, and it is the weakest of the set: small, unblinded, and self-selected. Published May 2020.

n=10 · open-label

GHK and GHK-Cu in blood

A convenience sample of ten adults, mean age 64, with no control group. GHK rose at 24 hours (p=0.0098) and GHK-Cu at seven days (p=0.0137). Small and unblinded — useful as a signal, not as proof.

Patent

US 10,716,953 B1 — Wearable Phototherapy Apparatus

Inventor David Schmidt, assigned to SoletLuna Holdings; filed 11 June 2019, granted 21 July 2020. It describes how the device is constructed and what it is intended to do. A patent establishes that an invention is novel and non-obvious — it is examined for that, not for whether the thing works in people, and it should never be read as a clinical result.
